  • 1 box cake mix (white or chocolate)
  • Eggs and oil as per box instructions
  • 1 can of frosting
  • 24 cake pop sticks
  • 24 oz candy melts (various colors)
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons Crisco shortening (for thinning)

Method
 

  1. Bake the cake according to the box instructions. Cool completely.
  2. Crumble cooled cake into fine crumbs in a large bowl.
  3. Add a portion of frosting (start with 1/4 can) and mix with your hands until dough holds together.
  4. Roll mixture into uniform balls using a cookie scoop.
  5. Chill the cake balls in the refrigerator until firm, about 15 minutes.
  6. Melt candy melts with shortening in a microwave-safe bowl until smooth.
  7. Dip the tip of each cake pop stick into melted candy and insert into the center of each cake ball.
  8. Freeze for about 30 minutes to set.
  9. Dip each cake ball into the melted candy, letting excess drip off, then place upright in a stand to dry.
  10. Decorate as desired and let harden at room temperature before serving.
